Nurses deserve as much credit and respect as doctors do. They deserve more recognition for not only assisting patients with medical etiquettes and services, but also for offering emotional support. It is basic decency to recognise nurses for carrying out their responsibilities to ensure public health. Unfortunately, a specific subset of unethical persons has a history of distorting everything about nurses to be something other than their hard work and dedication.

Nurses play a vital role in the medical profession and are frequently stereotyped as overly sympathetic ladies. Every day, nurses prioritize their patients beyond all else, but they are unfairly rewarded with bad stereotypes that are frequently perceived in any medium or in real life. The blood, sweat, and tears they have poured into their job appear to be rendered meaningless and they are invalidated as these public perceptions are put upon them.

Here are nurse stereotypes that are very derogatory, offensive and disrespectful to the community:

Nursing Is Woman-Dominated, Therefore It Is A Woman’s Job

Statistically, it is true. The nursing field has been historically conquered by female nurses, but perspectively, it is entirely incorrect. The field is very flexible when it comes to genders, therefore both male and female are welcome to study and work within the medical profession. In other specializations, such as nurse anesthetists, the ratio of male nurses to female nurses is nearly equal. This shift in demographic makeup is a start in the right direction, but male nurses continue to face stereotyping and misconceptions from patients and coworkers alike. Despite the fact that the number of male nurses enrolled in the sector has significantly increased over the years, this old gender stereotype persists.

Nurses Are Commonly Sexy And Flirtatious

This is one of the most common misconceptions about nurses which are often portrayed wrongly on TV shows, movies and many other digital platforms to name. For people with no sense of respect for the efforts the nursing community have put their blood, sweat and tears to ensure public health, they take the stereotypes into another level of the lack of civility. For instance, there was a portrayal of men disguised as female nurses in a highly sexualized and humiliating manner with the intent to raise funds for the Shropshire community health. Little do they know the representation of the nurses is incorrect, out of date, and derogatory to the profession. A sad reality to live in where people think of nurses as objects who are nothing but objects to perceive as sexual objects. There are even mediums which characterises them for being skilful with Malaysia sex toys. Society should look at nurses in a professional perspective where they are a profession that deserves to be held in high regard for keeping the world safe and being in good welfare.

Nurses Follow Everything Their Patients Ask For

Indeed, it is incorporated within the nurse’s duty to perform a compassionate and empathetic

Behavior towards their patients. But the community should get it drilled in their heads that nurses are not equivalent to staff in restaurants who prioritizes the quote “Customers are always right!” Just because they serve does not mean they will continuously do the same motivations consistently if they encounter any patients with no courtesy or gratitude. Yes, their duty does entail genuinely listening to patients’ concerns—but not acting as a servant who caters to their every desire. They are human as well, they can waver physically and/or mentally. Nurses are professionals who have a professional obligation to behave in the best interests of their patients. This could entail refusing a patient’s wishes if, for example, a patient with dietary restrictions demands a restricted meal or a patient wants more pain medicine than is safe.

Nurses In The Media Are Exactly How They Are In Real Life

Coming back to the previous point where the nurses’ characters are assassinated, media sources such as television shows, movies, theatres, songs and many more are not helping with the cause. Even the famous Grey’s Anatomy is not what it seems when it comes to the true depiction of a nurse. It is so obvious that you can see the common nurse stereotype or two in the popular show. Although it is for the sake of entertainment to watch your favorite television shows, it is just as important to acknowledge that  these on-screen depictions of nurse life are intended to create drama rather than to imitate actual life. That furthers the fact that the media can be a dangerous weapon which can manipulate even the littlest, trivial details in an information or data to create a ruckus within the society. Therefore, when you see an evident nursing cliché on TV, just enjoy the show while reminding yourself that nurses in the real world are accomplished professionals performing important jobs – saving lives.
