Give 100 mg of theophylline elixir.
The elixir comes as 27 mg per 5 mL. Using the calculator,
a dosage of 18.5 mL is prepared. In this example,
100 mg = dose ordered
27 mg = dose available
5 mL = volume available
100mg 27mg
x
5mL
Which = 18.52 mL
So the volume to give = 18.5 mL
See the example below.
Another example, give 650
mg of liquid acetaminophen (Tylenol®).
The liquid acetaminophen comes in a concentration of 120
mg per 5 mL. How much medication would you give?
Answer: 27 mL.
650 mg = dose ordered
120 mg = dose available
5 mL = volume available
650mg 120mg
x
5mL
which = 27.08 mL
So the volume to give =
27 mL
Note
It doesn't matter what
type of units are used in this calculator. You can
figure out how many grams to give or how many milligrams
to give, micrograms, units, grains, etc. Remember
to be consistent (i.e. don't mix milligrams with grams).
